Several PDF pages combining into one document

Free Merge PDF — Combine Files Without Uploading Them

Drag your PDFs in, arrange the pages, download one file. Everything runs in your browser, and pages are copied rather than re-rendered, so nothing loses quality.

Nothing is uploaded

Your PDFs are read and written on your own machine. There is no server copy waiting to be deleted, and no retention window to take on trust.

🎯

Genuinely lossless

Pages are transplanted whole — content streams, embedded fonts, image data. Nothing is rasterised or re-encoded, so a merge PDF run leaves the file matching its sources exactly.

🗂️

Page-level control

Reorder or delete individual pages, not just whole files. Mixed page sizes are preserved rather than forced into one box.

No caps of any kind

No file count limit, no page limit, no daily quota. Adobe stops at 100 files and 1,500 pages; PDF Candy allows one task per hour.

Why Merge PDF Tools Often Cost You Quality

Choosing a merge PDF tool sounds like it should not matter. Whether it is depends entirely on how the tool does the job, and the two approaches produce very different files.

Re-rendering vs Page Copying

The naive approach draws each source page into a new document. That means rasterising it — turning text, fonts and vector art into a grid of pixels. The result looks approximately right and is worse in every measurable way.

What "Lossless Merge" Actually Means

A PDF page is not an image. It is a content stream referencing embedded fonts, image objects and vector paths. A lossless merge transplants those objects into the output document unchanged, so the merged file is the same quality as its inputs and roughly the same combined size.

That is what this merge PDF tool does. Our test suite asserts the output stays within 1.5× the sum of its inputs, and that the merged page still carries a font resource — in other words, that a real text layer survived. A re-rendering implementation would fail both.

The practical difference: you can still select and search the text, the file does not balloon, and the PDF stays readable by anything that parses text rather than looking at pixels.

What Happens to Your File on a Server

Almost every free tool uploads your documents, merges them remotely, and holds a copy for a while. Published retention: Smallpdf one hour, PDF24 one hour, iLovePDF two hours, PDF Candy two hours.

For a batch of holiday photos that is irrelevant. For a signed contract, a set of medical records or a board pack, it is a different conversation — and it is a conversation you can avoid entirely by not uploading the file.

What Is a Merge PDF Tool?

A merge PDF tool combines several PDF files into a single document by copying their pages into one new file. A client-side merger does this inside your browser, so the documents are never transmitted anywhere.

Merging, Combining, Joining — Same Thing?

Yes. The phrases "merge PDF", "combine PDF" and "join PDF" all describe appending the pages of several documents into one. There is no technical distinction; the phrasing just varies by tool.

What does differ between merge PDF tools is how much control you get. Some tools only let you order whole files. This one treats every page as an independent card, so you can interleave two documents, drop a blank page from the middle of a scan, or pull one signature page out of a twenty-page contract.

Does It Use My Computer's Resources?

Yes, and this is worth being straight about. PDF24 markets its server-side approach with exactly this line: merging in the cloud "does not take up the resources of your system."

That is true. Merging a few hundred megabytes locally does use your memory. The trade is that you avoid two network transfers and any server-side copy of your document. In practice the cost is smaller than it sounds, because copying page objects is far cheaper than rendering them — we never decode an image or rasterise a page, we move references.

How to Merge PDF Files in 3 Steps

1

Drop your PDFs

Drag your files onto the box above, or click to browse. Each file is opened and checked as it lands, so a password-protected or corrupt PDF is reported immediately — not after you have spent five minutes arranging eighty pages.

2

Arrange the pages

Every page appears as a thumbnail in output order. Drag any of them to move it, or click the × to leave it out. Pages from different documents can be interleaved freely, and you can repeat a page if you need it twice.

3

Merge and download

Combine everything into one PDF and download it. Pages are copied rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution, and documents with mixed page sizes keep each page at its own dimensions.

What Merge PDF Keeps — and What It Loses

Page content survives a merge PDF operation intact. Document-level structure sometimes cannot, because two documents each have their own and only one can win.

Carried Over Untouched

The text layer, so the merged PDF stays searchable and selectable. Image data at its original resolution — nothing is recompressed. Embedded fonts. Vector graphics, which stay vectors. Per-page dimensions, so an A4 document and a Letter document keep their own sizes rather than being squeezed into one. Links that point within a page.

Not Carried Over

Bookmarks and the document outline. Form fields and any values entered into them. Document-level metadata such as title and author. File attachments. Links that pointed from one source document to another, since the target no longer exists as a separate file.

Why Digital Signatures Break When You Merge

A digital signature certifies that a specific byte sequence has not changed. Merging necessarily produces a different file, so the signature no longer matches and is dropped. This is not a limitation of this tool — it is what a signature is for, and every PDF merger behaves the same way. If you need signatures intact, sign the merged document rather than merging signed ones.

Encrypted PDFs

A password-protected PDF cannot be read without its password, so it cannot be merged. We detect this when the file is dropped and say so immediately. Remove the protection in your PDF reader first, then merge.

What You Can Do With It

Combining Scanned Contract Pages

Scanners often produce one file per page, or split a document at every feeder jam. Merging them back into one file is the most common reason anyone searches for a merge PDF tool — and contracts are exactly the documents you would rather not upload.

Assembling Application Packets

Visa applications, grant submissions and job applications frequently demand a single PDF containing several documents in a specified order. Page-level control matters here: requirements usually name an exact sequence, and dropping a page you were told to omit is easier than re-exporting.

Merging Invoices for Accounting

Month-end often means dozens of individual invoice PDFs that need to arrive as one file. There is no file count limit here, so a folder of sixty invoices merges in one pass.

Building a Portfolio PDF

Combine exported design boards, case studies and a cover page into one document. Because merging is lossless, your images keep the resolution you exported them at — a re-rendering merger would quietly downsample them.

If your source material is images rather than PDFs, convert them first with our JPG to PDF tool, then merge the results.

After You Merge PDF Files: Compress, Convert, Share

If the Merged File Is Too Large for Email

A merged PDF is about the size of its inputs added together, so if the result is large, one of the sources was. Images are almost always the reason. Compressing them with our JPEG compressor or PNG compressor before they become PDF pages works far better than compressing the finished document.

Starting From Word Documents

If some of what you are merging is still in Word, convert it first with our Word to PDF converter — also entirely in-browser — then bring the resulting PDFs back here.

Before sending the assembled document anywhere, it is worth adding a watermark and clearing metadata from any images inside it, since photographs routinely carry GPS coordinates that survive being placed into a document.

Everything above follows the same rule as this merge PDF tool: your files stay on your machine. The rest of the set lives on our free PDF tools page, and the image tools are on all our free browser tools.

Re-rendering pages versus copying page objectsRe-rendering rasterises each page, producing a larger file with no selectable text. Copying page objects moves the original content streams, fonts and images unchanged, keeping quality identical and the text layer intact.Re-rendering each pageOriginalrenderPixelsWhat you loseNo selectable or searchable textFile size grows several times overFonts and vectors become bitmapsCopying page objectsOriginalcopyIdenticalWhat you keepText stays selectable and searchableOutput ≈ the sum of the inputsFonts and vectors stay vectors
Copying page objects keeps the text layer and the original image data. Re-rendering throws both away.

What survives a merge, and what does not

Merging is lossless for page content, but a PDF carries document-level structure that cannot survive being combined with another file. Here is the full list.

What a merge preserves and what it dropsCarried over untouched: the text layer and search, original image quality, embedded fonts, vector graphics, per-page dimensions, and links within a page. Merge PDF — Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, with no cap. The merge runs on your own hardware, so there is no per-file cost to pass on. No daily quota, no watermark, and no paid tier that unlocks larger jobs.

No. Your PDFs are read into browser memory and the merged file is written there too. Open DevTools and watch the Network tab while you merge — nothing is sent.

No hard limit; the practical ceiling is your device memory. For comparison, Adobe caps free merging at 100 files and 1,500 pages, and PDF Candy allows one task per hour.

No. A merge PDF run copies pages as objects rather than re-rendered, so images keep their original resolution, fonts stay embedded and text stays selectable. The output is roughly the sum of the input sizes.

Yes. Every page appears as its own thumbnail and can be dragged anywhere in the sequence or removed. You can interleave pages from different documents and repeat a page if you need it more than once.

An encrypted PDF cannot be read without its password, so its pages cannot be copied. We check on drop and tell you straight away. Remove the protection in your PDF reader, then merge.

They are not carried over. Bookmarks and form fields are document-level structures that cannot be meaningfully combined, and a digital signature certifies an exact file, so any change invalidates it. Sign the merged document rather than merging signed ones.

Convert the images to PDF first with our JPG to PDF tool, then merge the results here. Both run in your browser, so the images are never uploaded either.
